WHERE IS NAGALAND’S RAINBOW (NATIONAL FLAG) IN ASIA’S FINEST HOUR?Kaka D. IraluJune 11, 2002To borrow a word from Churchill’s rich vocabulary, I believe the 20th century was meant to be Asia’s finest hour. This was not only her century for freedom from colonial rule but also the century where she developed herself to a position where she could even challenge her former colonisers. This does not mean that prior to the 20th century, Asia was not a continent of nations. It indeed was a continent of many nations, but nations that had been suppressed by the white man’s rule of over five centuries (16th – 20th century).

The Concept of Sobaliba: From the Outside Looking In |
 |
Culture is defined as the sum total of the original solutions that a group of human beings invent to adapt to their natural and social environment [Thierry G. Verhelst, No Life Without Roots: Culture and Development. London: Zed Books Ltd., 1990, p.3]. It develops out of human beings’ encounter with the nature and the environment, when they adapt certain features in order to meet their needs and to solve their problems and to live within the demands, restrains and the potentials of the environment [K. Thanzauva, Theology of Community: Tribal Theology in the Making. Aizawl: Mizo Theological Conference, 1997, p. 43]. Thus, culture depends on the conditions of the people’s environment and may change as the environment changes. As development progress in any society, new cultural values seep into the existing traditional cultures, making the old values die off eventually as it becomes weaker in contrast to the dominant new culture.

A layman’s dream.
My Dear Naga Freedom Fighters,
Here is a humble request from a fellow son of a Naga. Please sit straight, open your eyes and ears and spare one minute of your precious time for me. I demand this of you without any inhibitions whatsoever, because I believe I deserve one minute of your total attention.

Do we Nagas need an Idol? Is the Judging, voting Fair? Should the criteria to choose an Idol just be on singing? What about the rest of the other talented youngsters who are talented in other field other than singing? Does the majority of the Nagas say Amen to choose an Idol amongst us based on singing alone? Can’t anyone in Nagaland come up with something different, which we can call it our own… rather than apt the exact way the American’s do? Can’t there atleast be a twist there and a turn here in the system of choosing an Idol amongst the Nagas?

Fighting the Mighty English: Remembering the sacrifices of our Naga ancestors towards our Nation-Making
K.Toshinaro Longchar
Introduction: The colonial obsession with the so called ‘primitive’ was phenomenal. For the West, the ‘Others’ and the ‘Rest’ were all constructed as traditional, backward, and uncivilized people. But again in the Indian context, ‘Civilization’ was within the Caste system. Beyond the Caste lies primitivism, who were the dalits, tribals or the hill peoples as they were known then.

Soldiers Clap
The soldiers are tired and lonely after spending weeks in enemy territory. To entertain them the Major called for this HOT number from the nearby town. She came, danced and when the first dance was done, the soldiers went mad. They clapped for 5 minutes. For her second number she stripped and danced in sheer bra and G strings. This time the applause went for 10 minutes The next number she danced topless, and this time the applause went on and on. The Major had to come on stage and ask them to quieten down for the grand finale. For her last number, she was to strip completely and dance naked. The Major expected the soldiers to make enough noise to bring the roof down. But ten minutes later, there is no clapping and the dancer comes backstage. The Major asks her, "What happened? How come there was no clapping this time?" She replied, "Major, how do you expect those poor boys to clap with one hand?!!?" Hits: 1044 Added: 05-Oct-2008 More Jokes
