It gives me no pleasure to criticize anybody on the divergent views expressed on the much talk about “Dry State” but the truth must prevail and there is no denying that the act has miserably failed. However, the administration, law enforcing agency, NMA, NBCC etc are conclusive of the view that prohibition has been partially successful, may be they have said so because of the virtue of their status. In this regard, I, as for one totally disagree with them in toto. It is an open secret that taxi loaded with alcohol and plying on national highway-39 are sometimes seized.

When the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act (NLTP) 1989 was finally enacted on April 13 1990, after 23 years of struggle, it was seen as a victory of ‘goodness’ over ‘evil’ and therefore historic.
The predominantly Christian state had won a battle – a battle supposed to have been won for the victims of alcoholism, drunkenness, insobriety, intemperance, debauchery, licentiousness, broken homes and marriages, premature deaths, spiritual decadence and more specially the younger generations.

A wow and Kudos to all the responsible citizens of Nagaland. Two decades back The state of Nagaland was declared a DRY DRY VERY State. Thanks to the Efforts put in by the Churches and by various organisations and the sagely wisdom of the Legislators of that time. It was a time when money was like lettuce (LAIPATTA) to the Nagas. Our virgin forests were being exploited in full swing sans any restriction, everyone was a contractor.

Members Article : A brief history of liquour prohibition movement in Nagaland |
 |
NBCC Prohibition Committee
I. MISSIONARY PERIOD
From the very beginning the Baptist Church had resolved to fight out the liquor and its evils. The American Missionary Conference adopted a resolution in Kolkata in 1875 on “Total Abstinence from liquor”. This decision was binding in all churches of the Naga Hills. Dr. Clark at Impur Field and Rev. Rivenburg at Kohima Field made the total abstinence from drink of local rice-beer a basic condition for Baptism and admission into the Church membership. By that time the Missionaries introduced and popularized the drinking of ‘Tea’ among the Nagas. Baptist’s Church movement on prohibition was opposed by British Administrators, but Prohibition was successful till the Independence of India in 1947.

From the beginning of Nagaland and statehood, the churches in Nagaland have committed to pray for the state and the government. Every time a new government is formed, the church leadership represented by NBCC met with the Chief Minister and his Cabinet Ministers to pray and to submit a list of concerns for the welfare of the people and the state in which liquor was a regular item to be addressed and regulated.

I have been keeping my mouth shut and my pen down because I felt I had shouted and written enough digging up the past and pleading that reconciliation among the Naga family must precede a solution with India. But as you journey across Nagaland in your mission of reconciliation, I can no longer constrain myself to be a silent spectator. And so allow me to express a few words again as I also love our nation as much as you.

Monday Sickness
The company hires a new man. He was supposed to start work on a Monday, but instead of showing up, he calls his boss. "I'm sick," he says. The boss excuses him. The man shows up Tuesday morning and works throughout the week, greatly impressing everyone with his diligence and ability. The next Monday, he once again calls his boss. "I'm sick," he says. The boss reluctantly excuses him, but notices that this is the second Monday in a row. Once again, the man shows up Tuesday morning and works throughout the week, even faster and better than the previous week. The following Monday, he calls his boss again. "I'm sick." The boss excuses him, but decides to call the man to task on Tuesday. Tuesday comes and as soon as the man shows up, the boss calls him into his office. "What gives?" asks the boss. "I can see you're a hard worker, but you've only been here three weeks and you've called in sick every Monday." The man says, "Well, my sister is in a bad marriage and I go over to console her every Monday morning before work. One thing leads to another and we end up making love all day long." "Your sister!?!" says the boss. "That's disgusting!" The man says, "I *told* you I was sick." Hits: 1017 Added: 05-Oct-2008 More Jokes
